Notes: John BANKS was a Thames waterman, apprenticed at Rotherhithe to
Francis HAY, from 20th October 1796 to 21st January 1813 [information supplied
by Rob Cottrell, from his 'Watermen & Lightermen Index']. Such an apprenticeship
normally lasted about 7 years, but John's seems to have endured for over 16 years.
Maybe he was a slow learner!
