      ACQUITTAL OF INSPECTOR CLARKE  - On Tuesday last the great trial of the Detectives at the Old Bailey was brought to a close, when Inspector Clarke was acquitted, the verdict in his case being received by the large public assembly in Court with unusual manifestations of public approval, the loud cheers from the assemblage being very sternly rebuked by the Judge.  A full report of the conclusion of the trial, scene in Court, &c., will be found on our third page.

SUDDEN DEATH

  
  A case of very sudden death occurred on Wednesday evening at Mackerel Hall to Mrs. Hagger, widow of the late Edward Hagger.  It appears that Mrs. Hagger, who is 64 years of age, had, since the death of her husband some four years ago, kept the house on at Mackerel Hall, but lately had been away with a daughter in London.  On Monday she returned to Royston, and was about as usual up till Wednesday evening.  About 6.30 p.m. she went across the yard for a pail of soft water, and was heard by her daughter-in-law to call out, "Oh Emma," and the latter saw her fall.  She was taken into the house but did not speak again, and died in a few minutes.  It appears that she had been ailing at times, was known to be suffering with her heart, and had been medically attended while at her daughter's in London.  The death was reported to the Coroner, Mr. D. B. Balding, who upon the information open to him, did not consider it a case in which an inquest was necessary.
