Thomas Gatward Farmer
Giffen Shop Keeper

In Miss Helen Pelham Dale's "Life and Letters of the Rev. Thomas Pelham Dale" there is a graphic account of the rural parish of Therfield, near Royston, to which Mr. Dale's father retired on leaving St. Pancras in 1860.  She says: "Dissent was very active, and the rector, while promising an equal distribution of flannel petticoats, tried to persuade the villagers to keep to either church or chapel.  But the country mind is slow to alter.  They had always been accustomed to pay court to the church and attend the chapel, or else to snub the one by going to the other.  A quarrel over a vacant pew, for example, caused a lapse into Dissent.  Two farmers claimed the pew; the one had spoken to the churchwarden; the other had had the use of it suggested to him in the course of conversation by one of the ladies at the rectory.  They both came to take possession and met in the pew, a high one.  They had a whispered dispute, from words they came to blows, they were not noisy about it, but fought together, punching each other's head as quietly as the action permitted in the shelter of the pew.  The final decision was in favour of the churchwarden's nominee, and the defeated farmer retired to the chapel in great wrath - only to return to the church when a suitable pew fell vacant.

[Thomas GATWARD and (Joseph) GIFFEN are presumed to be the pugilists described in the article.  The winner is not named, but GATWARD's youngest two children were baptised at Chapel in 1863/1865 (his earlier children were baptised at Church), which probably indicates that GATWARD was the loser of the "Battle of the Pew"]

SUDDEN DEATH ON THE HEATH

A painful impression was created in the town this (Friday) morning about eleven o'clock by the intelligence that a man had died suddenly while on his way across the Heath from Therfield to Royston.  The deceased, George Pratt, a labourer, residing at Hoops Lane, Therfield, apparently between sixty and seventy years of age, had, it appears, been attended by a doctor, having a club certificate, dated January 17th, upon him and a medicine bottle.  He was on his way to the surgery at Royston, for medicine, and was overtaken by a youth named Frank Hagger, who was also going to the doctor.  To him Pratt complained of a pain in his side, and when near the flagstaff, on the top of the Heath, fell down apparently in a dying condition.  Hagger remained with him some time, when a man named John Robinson, of Therfield, who was also on his way to the doctor, came up when deceased breathed his last, at 9.40.  Hagger went on, leaving Robinson with the deceased till P.c. Westlake, stationed at Therfield, was crossing the heath and was beckoned by Robinson.  P.c. Westlake sent into the town for assistance, and Inspector Goodyear had the body removed to the Royston Hospital.  An inquest will probably be held unless the previous attendance and examination of the body should enable a certificate of the cause of death to be given.
