* From the 'Royston Crow', 24 Oct 1879

With all the bustle and high pressure of railway life and work, there is perhaps associated too much the idea of a mere mechanical arrangement, for the public to recognise the immense force of discipline which is daily brought to bear upon the character and duties of the more responsible of railway servants, to whose steadiness, intelligence, and resource is entrusted in so large a degree the safety of the public.  It is only when an emergency brings out the value of such discipline, that the general public realise how much they owe to its exercise, and that the truest heroism is compatible with a humble calling.  The following bit of railway biography is a case in point.
The London and North-Western Railway Company have in their employ a guard - Mr. Piercy Lambert by name - who has been in their employ for more than forty years, and whose career illustrates what may be called the romance of railway work.  So long ago as 1838 Mr. Lambert entered the company's service in the humble capacity of porter.  From this position he was speedily promoted to that of ticket collector, and in 1839 he became a passenger guard.  From that time up to the present Mr. Lambert has rendered yeoman's service both to his employers and to the public.  His work has happily not been without recognition.  As long ago as 1848 Mr. Lambert received a pecuniary reward and the unusual honour of a formal vote of thanks from the board of directors for his services in connection with a strike of engine drivers.  In 1852 he was the hero of a still more remarkable adventure.  Whilst in charge of one of the expresses between London and Manchester, his attention was drawn by a signal to the fact that something was wrong in one of the carriages at a point between Rugby and Boxmoor.  The guards had at that time to ride on top of the carriages, and though the train was travelling at a great speed at the moment Lambert clambered from carriage to carriage, at the imminent risk of his neck, till the engine driver was reached, and by that means the train was stopped at Watford.  There it was discovered that a lady, travelling with her maid, was ill, her indisposition resulting in the safe birth of a child.  The guard's gallantry was very properly acknowledged by the lady's husband.  In the same year Lambert was allowed to receive a special reward from the friends of a lady whom he protected from the assault of a ruffian, who was subsequently committed to Northampton assizes.  In 1849 Mr. Lambert took a prominent part in the formation of the Railway Guards Universal Friendly Society.  In 1864 he again proved himself a friend in need, on the occasion of a lady passenger being taken suddenly and dangerously ill, and received a silver railway whistle from a grateful husband in recognition of his attentions.  This numeration does not exhaust the list of testimonials.  The public will read with interest that Mr. Lambert has "worked" one of the expresses between Euston and Manchester for 27 years, during which period he has travelled upwards of two million miles, and has looked after the safety of thousands of passengers, of whom only one has been in the slightest injured.  Mr. Lambert still "works" one of the London expresses, and is, it is pleasant to learn, almost as brisk as ever.
It may interest readers to know that Mr. Lambert (an admirable likeness of whom recently appeared in the British Workman), married the daughter of the late Mr. William Manning, of Therfield, and that his second wife was sister of Mr. Draper, of Royston.
