Notes: The identity of Jacob's parents is a mystery. The IGI includes
59 Trenchards among the Church of England baptisms at Yarcombe, 1545-1837, but
no Jacob baptised around 1791. His parents were presumably nonconformists
of some kind. However, there is circumstantial evidence pointing to several
possible siblings of Jacob.
During the period that Jacob was registering the births of his children at the
Baptist Chapel at Taunton, Joel and Benjamin Tranchard were doing the same.
This may not seem significant, but the congregation was extremely small.
From 1820-1837, only 88 births were registered, of which 10 were children of
Jacob, Joel and Benjamin Tranchard. When Jacob's daughter Martha married
at Taunton in 1848, Joel Trenchard was one of the witnesses. Like Jacob,
Joel was also born at Yarcombe (c.1790), and also a shoemaker. When Jacob
married in 1816, one of the witnesses was Ephraim Trenchard. And when
he died, the informant was Elizabeth Trenchard, who was probably Joel's wife.
It would seem quite likely that Jacob, Joel, Benjamin and Ephraim were all brothers.
When two of Jacob's children, James Eli and Phebe, migrated to Jersey in the
early 1840s, already there was Joseph Ackland Trenchard, another shoemaker born
(c.1795) at Yarcombe. Another brother...? None of these names —
Jacob, Joel, Benjamin, Ephraim, or Joseph — feature in the Yarcombe Church
of England baptism registers.
Joseph Ackland Trenchard married for a second time in Jersey in 1858, and his
father was Samuel, also a shoemaker. This does at least help with the parentage
of Joseph, because the IGI includes the 2 Nov 1784 marriage at Yarcombe of Samuel
Trenchard & Sarah Ackland. The couple failed to baptise any children at
Yarcombe, but they must be the parents of Joseph, and could also be the parents
of Jacob, Joel, Benjamin and Ephraim, and possibly others.

Source: Approximate year of birth only, calculated from:
1841 census of Taunton, Somerset - aged
50, born Somerset [almost certainly a birthplace error, because at his marriage
he was "of Yarcombe", which is in Devon]
1848 Death certificate - aged 56

Source: Print from microfilm of original register, supplied by Pamela
Steadman, which read as follows:
"Jacob Tranchard of the Parish of Yarcombe in the County of Devon and Hannah
Syms of the Parish of Chard in Somersetshire, both resident in this Parish, were
married in this Church by Banns this twenty fifth Day of December in the Year
One thousand eight hundred and sixteen - By me L. H. Clapp Vicar."
Jacob Trenchard signed the register, and Hannah Syms made her mark 'X'.
Witnesses were Ephraim Trenchard and J. Long (the latter was witness to another
marriage on the same page, which probably indicates that he was not connected
to the bride or groom, but just a regular witness - maybe the Parish Clerk, or
similar).
