Notes: In the 1851 census, Robert was recorded as Robert MILLS, son of
James MILLS, but he was born about 7 years before his mother married James MILLS,
so it must be fairly unlikely (but not impossible) that James was his father,
especially as his birth registration surname was ORCHARD. The 1861 census
tells us that Robert used ORCHARD while serving in the Royal Navy, but he seems
to have called himself MILLS thereafter. That was certainly his name when
he married Esther MARTIN in 1869, when his father was again recorded as James
MILLS.
But in 1901, the census records that Robert's father was Frederick MILLS, brother
of the aforementioned James MILLS. This odd contradiction is almost certainly
explained by the fact that Robert's mother was the wife of James MILLS in 1851,
but she was subsequently the partner of Frederick MILLS. She was, in fact,
the partner of Frederick MILLS for about 40 years, so it is no surpise that
Robert came to regard Frederick as his father.
As it happens, neither James nor Frederick MILLS were likely to have been Robert's
father. They were merely his mother's partners, or in the case of James,
her husband.
