Notes: Named as a beneficiary in his wife's uncle Edward PRASCEY's will, proved in 1780.
Occupation
Jonathan SILLS was a successful merchant and wharfinger in the City of London.
He first appears in trades directories in 1771, described as a merchant of 9
Upper Thames Street. By 1790, he had taken two of his sons, Joseph and
Jonathan junior, into partnership, trading as Jonathan Sills and Sons, merchants
and wharfingers of Hambro Wharf and 217 Upper Thames Street. After Jonathan
senior died in 1800, his two sons continued the business.

Source: Burial register (image online at www.ancestry.co.uk). The
register states that Jonathan died of asthma, aged 71, and was buried, "in the
Vault in the North Side Isle (sic) of the Church". This was plainly the
'family grave', because on the same page is Jonathan's sister, Hannah GIRLING,
aged 64, who was buried in the same vault a month earlier, on 19th January.
The burial register is that of St Peter's, Paul's Wharf, but the vault must
have been in St Benet's, because St Peter's was destroyed in the Great Fire.
The church was not rebuilt, and the parish was united with St Benet's.
On 27 Feb 1800, only four days after he was buried, Jonathan SILLS' will was proved in London. Due to it's numerous
bequests to members of his wife's family, the will provided essential help with
determining the ALLEN family structure.
