[11305] Source: Marriage register, online at www.ancestry.co.uk. The groom's father was Robert PATTERSON, Fisherman... and the bride was only 16!
[11306] Source: Marriage register, online at www.ancestry.co.uk. Emily Jane's (married) surname was recorded correctly, but she appears to have passed herself off as a spinster, and given her late husband's father's name as her father.
[11303] Notes: Alfred George WEBB & Emily Jane SAUNTER appear not to have married. This was probably due to the circumstances surrounding the death of Emily Jane's late husband Henry J K STOYLES, who had drowned in the Thames. When a person dies through drowning, no death certificate can be issued without a body, and then the spouse has to wait seven years to prove being a widow/widower. It is almost certain that neither Emily Jane, nor her new partner Alfred George WEBB, could have afforded the legal fees to prove she was a widow - so they remained unmarried. Also, following the death of her husband, Emily would probably have been receiving a pension from the docks, which she would have lost if she had married again. This would have been a further disincentive to any marriage plans (information supplied by Vera Bailey)
