Notes: In 1988, I met two of Alfred's grandchildren, both then still living
at Therfield, Win(ifred) MULLENDER and Joyce GATWARD. They are two of the children
of Alfred's son Joseph. They remembered their grandfather Alfred well, especially
Win, who is much older than Joyce. Alfred lived in half of what is now Bury Hall
(it was previously split into 2 cottages). Bury Hall is right next to the church,
and Win and Joyce remember him keeping the churchyard tidy, and tending the
church boiler. He apparently did a fine job of both; the grass was kept trimmed,
and the church was as warm as toast. Quite unlike today (1988), when the graves
are mostly hidden by nettles, and the church heating no longer functions at all.
It is freezing in winter - colder than being outside! Large ugly gas bottles
are dotted round the church, feeding little heaters, which according to Win,
"Only warm your face if you are right in front of one, but your feet remain frozen.

Alfred's birth does not appear in the GRO (General Register Office) Births Index.
Bearing in mind that his brothers and sisters (apart from the 4 born before
the introduction of civil registration) were all registered, this is a little
surprising. It is possible that his birth was recorded at the local register
office (Royston), but not included in the GRO Index.
