Source: Copy of GRO birth certificate, which records the parents as George
PRACY, a carman, and Jane PRACY, formerly FORD.
Approximate year of birth calculated from:
1861 census of Shoreditch, Middlesex -
aged 2, no birthplace recorded (as George FORD)
1871 census of Shoreditch, Middlesex -
aged 13, born Shoreditch (as George FORD)
The only practical candidate for the father is George
Philip PRACY, a cabman, then aged 20, but he did not marry Jane FORD.
He was a bachelor at his 1861 marriage to Angelina MEADWELL, and Jane was a spinster
at her 1867 marriage to John Firman COCKERTON.
Despite being registered as PRACY, George junior seems to have been known as
FORD, his mother's surname. In 1861, he was still at 8 Luke Street, aged
2, and named as George FORD. Above him on the census page was James FORD,
27, a brush drawer, born Bethnal Green. Unlikely as it might seem, James
FORD was almost certainly Jane FORD, but a mistake has been made by someone,
presumably the enumerator.
On 10 Sep 1867, at St James Church, Shoreditch, Jane FORD, 33, spinster, a brush
drawer, daughter of James FORD, brush maker, married John Firman COCKERTON, 33,
bachelor, a waiter, son of James COCKERTON deceased, shoe maker.
In 1871, John & Jane COCKERTON were at 19 Wilks Place, Shoreditch, along with
George FORD, 13, scholar, born Shoreditch, who was obviously Jane's son, allegedly
fathered by George PRACY. Slightly surprisingly, George FORD was recorded
as a lodger. Due to the fact that he was not the son of 'head of household'
John COCKERTON, the description may have been technically correct, but it does
seem a harsh way to describe your wife's son by a previous relationship.
To be fair to John COCKERTON, the term 'lodger' may have been suggested by the
enumerator.
It cannot be coincidence that, at Luke Street in 1861, and Wilks Place in 1871,
Jane and George FORD were living with, and apparently tenants of, Matthew &
Ann MACE. It seems likely that Jane FORD was related to the MACEs, but
no link has been found. Disappointingly, Ann MACE's maiden name turns out
to be RICHARDS, not FORD, although that does not disqualify her from being related
to Jane FORD.
There is no sign of John & Jane COCKERTON, nor George FORD, in the 1881 census.
Jane COCKERTON died at Shoreditch in 1874, aged 41, and husband John Ferman
(sic) COCKERTON died in 1875. The post-1871 fate of George FORD/PRACY is
a mystery, and likely to remain so. He probably was the son of George Philip
PRACY.
