Faulkner A FAULKNER, 60, Witney, 3a 491". The change of surname occurred
in 1843, as result of a clause in his uncle William FAULKNER's will. This
stated that, in order to inherit Uncle William's property, Christopher had to
change his surname to FAULKNER. Understandably, Christopher was happy to
oblige, and made the following announcement in The Gentleman's Magazine.....
"Aug 14. Christopher Faulkner Allen, of Bury Barns, Burford, co. Oxford,
gent, only son of Edward Prascey Allen, of Kings-road, Chelsea, co. Middlesex,
gent. by Mary Jordan, his wife, eldest sister and coheir of W. Faulkner, late
of Bury Barns, aforesaid, gent. dec. to take the surname of Faulkner after his
present names."
William FAULKNER's death was registered in the June quarter of 1843. His
will was proved on 25 Aug 1843, but Christopher's announcement pre-dates it,
thus ensuring the speediest acquisition of William FAULKNER's property (presumably
Bury Barns).

In the online GRO births index at FreeBMD.org.uk, must be..... "Mar 1895, Sydney
Lee CHENERY, Bromley, 2a 448" (the 1901/1911 census tells us he was actually
born at Beckenham).

Royalnts (sic) Hospital Winchester Administration Lewes 1 Dece Hamber (sic) to
Nora Chenery widow. Effects £1735 6s. 5d." (obviously no spellcheckers
in 1953)
