Notes: Like most men at the time, Charles Cunningham CONDON served in
the Armed Forces during World War One. He enlisted in the 2nd London Regiment
on 23 Nov 1915, the day after his 19th birthday the youngest age at which
soldiers in the British Army were permitted to fight. He was sent to France,
and fought at the Battle of Passchendaele (officially known as the Third Battle
of Ypres), which lasted from Jul-Nov 1917. He was severely injured when
a bullet shattered his left thigh bone, and after a lengthy wait on the battlefield,
he was picked up by a German first aid team on 26 Oct 1917. The date
is recorded in the documentation associated with his eventual release, which
was discovered in the Archives
of the the International Committee of the Red Cross.
After over 6 months in captivity, Charles was released in a prisoner exchange
on 8 May 1918, and then discharged from the Army on 5 Jul 1918. His discharge
papers record that he was "NO LONGER PHYSICALLY FIT For War Service, 392 XVI
K. R., after serving 2 years 167 days with the Colours, and 58 days in the Army
Reserve". During this time, he had risen from a Private to the rank of
Lance Sergeant.
Brief details of his WW1 service were also found by a 'Condon' search of the
Bailiwick
of Jersey Roll of Service.
Charles is mentioned in (his aunt) Ellen
Emma Burrell Alexander's will, which names four of his children among the
beneficiaries.

[8655] Source: Burial register (image online at www.ancestry.co.uk)..... "James PRACY, Moorfields, 2 years". Despite the absence of a middle name, this must be James Charles, because he was 2 years-old (more or less), and his family lived in the Moorfields area. Why St Dunstan's...? Because City of London churchyards were full, and further burials had been banned..
