[775] Source: Scanned copy of Jersey baptism register at Ancestry.co.uk. At the time of his baptism, Charles was 15, and both his parents were dead, so the choice was presumably his alone. The reason why he changed his middle name from Burrell to Stokes is a complete mystery, but he continued to use it thereafter. He was Charles Stokes WITT when he married in 1897, and when he was later in business with his wife's brothers. He also had the Stokes middle name in his will, proved in 1950, But whoever reported his death hedged their bets, because he is Charles S B WITT in the official deaths index, which presumably included both his middle names.

"WITT Charles Stokes of 17 St. Pirans-avenue Portsmouth died 14 January 1949
at St. Mary's Hospital Portsmouth Probate London 8 December (1950) to Frank Percival
March solicitor and Stanley Norman Witt stationer. Effects £718 15s. 8d."
In the online GRO deaths index at Ancestry.co.uk, must be..... "Mar 1949, Charles
S B WITT, (aged) 75, Portsmouth, 6b 579"
[11120] Source: Marriage register (image online at www.ancestry.co.uk). The groom used the 'new' middle name he acquired at his 1888 baptism, and the bride omitted her middle name altogether. The groom's father was Charles Burrell WITT deceased, a clerk, and the bride's was Thomas Abram TORODE, a bricklayer.
