[6450] Notes: The Christmas family tree goes back to about 1530, and starts in Northchapel in West Sussex. From there the family moved across the county border into Hampshire, and lived in Alton and the surrounding villages until Daniel came to London in about 1860 (information supplied by Mary Burrows).

Notes: William cannot be found in the 1861 or 1871 census. He may
have been in the armed forces, or may have migrated abroad. But wherever
he was, he seems to have reappeared around 1872, married Elizabeth HUGHES (though
no marriage can be found), and started a family in London. He appears to
have brought his first two children back home to be baptised. They are
recorded in the Therfield Chapel register as follows.....
Cecilia Isabella HAGGAR, dau of William (labourer) & Elizabeth, born 23 Jun 1872
in London, baptised 6 Jul 1873
William Edward HAGGAR, son of William (cabman) & Elizabeth, born 2 Feb 1874 in
London, baptised 8 Aug 1874
This family were found in the 1881-1911 census, with William (presumably lying
through his teeth about his age) recorded as follows.....
1881 Marylebone - William HAGGER, Head, M, 31, Omnibus Driver, Hertfordshire
Therfield
1891 Paddington - William HAGGAR, Head, M, 43, Bus Driver, Yorkshire Sheffield
[birthplace must be enumerator error]
1901 Paddington - William HAGGER, Head, M, 48, Bus Driver, Therfield Royston
1911 Paddington - William HAGGAR, Head, M, 62, Bus Driver, Cambridge [birthplace
inexplicably incorrect]
Without a marriage certificate for William HAGGER & Elizabeth HUGHES (which would
identify William's father), we cannot be absolutely certain that the above William
was the son of William HAGGER & Hannah KING, but it seems a most likely scenario.

[10681] Notes: On 19th March 1834, when the ship Samuel Robertson arrived in New York on its journey from London, England, among the 106 passengers aboard, was the MATTHEWS family, comprising Ann 48, the mother, and her children, William 21, John 18, Ephraim 14, Ann 12, Eliza 6, and Caroline 4. The father of the chidren, and husband of Ann, Ephraim MATTHEWS senior, was not with the family, but had presumably made the journey at an earlier date, in order to pave the way for his family's arrival.
