Notes: James TUCKER and Lucy HAGGER were the great-grandparents of Tony
Warner. See Other researchers page for contact details.
Lucy HAGGER was almost certainly the daughter of John WOOD, despite him not being
named on either her birth or marriage certificates. The Therfield census provides
good evidence. In 1841, Lucy (aged 1) and her mother Rachel were living with
Rachel's parents, John & Mary HAGGER - and with Lucy conspicuously recorded as
Lucy WOOD. This would seem to signify that John WOOD was accepted as Lucy's father,
even though he did not marry her mother Rachel for another 14 years. In 1851,
Lucy HAGGER was actually recorded as the daughter of John WOOD. Taken together,
the 1841 & 1851 evidence points strongly to John WOOD being Lucy's father.
So why did John WOOD & Rachel HAGGER not marry till 1854, especially as they
appear to have had another child together (George HAGGER) in 1846? John WOOD
was a widower when he married Rachel, so maybe he had to wait for the death of
his previous wife? This is not very likely, because he was already a widower
in 1851. Maybe it had something to do with John's 74 year-old mother Judith,
who was living with them in 1851. Maybe there was an inheritance involved? Or
maybe Judith disapproved of a marriage, so they waited till after her death (assuming
she died from 1851-54). Further research required.....
