Notes: The UK and Australian descendants of Michael CONDON have been attempting
to trace their Irish ancestry (sporadically) since at least the 1970s.
After a fair amount of success, there remained one huge unanswered question.
What became of Michael CONDON? He owned a grave at St Helier, Jersey,
in which were buried both of his parents, two of his children, and his wife,
but not himself. And there is no record of his death in Jersey.
The answer to the riddle arrived in July 2015, in a surprise email from Cathy
Piper, in Maine, USA. Cathy said that Michael CONDON had gone to America,
and that he was her great-grandfather. This news was met with a healthy
dose of scepticism, but it was backed up with a copy of a Letter from Cappoquin, sent to Michael CONDON in New York in 1925.
After absorbing the contents of the letter, the scepticism melted away.
Cathy and I turn out to be closely related. She and my late mother are
second cousins.
The reason for Michael CONDON's departure from Jersey to the USA remains a mystery.
According to US census records, he arrived there in 1870, but if he did,
he must have returned to Jersey, because he was there for the 1881 census.
He appears to have migrated permanently to the US in the 1880s, but we don't
know if he abandoned his wife, or if she kicked him out, or if there was another
reason. His brother Thomas also spent a short time in the USA. His
first child (William Thomas) was born at Boston in 1890, but then Thomas took
his family back to Jersey. At around the same time, Michael's son Patrick
was involved in Irish Republican politics, as is evident from an 1891 Tribute to Vincent Scully. It is possible that the American connections
were linked to Irish politics. Plenty of the Irish inhabitants of Boston
would have shared Patrick's anti-British feelings, and some are known to have
helped finance Irish Republican activities across the Atlantic.
While the reason or reasons for Michael's departure from Jersey are unknown,
so too are the reasons for his departure from Cappoquin around 1867. The
usual reason for migration is economic necessity, but the economy of Jersey was
not doing particularly well in the 1860s, so why Jersey...? One thing we
do know is that Michael's sister Catherine had already been in Jersey for at
least 10 years before Michael's arrival, because she married there in 1857.
And her sister Honora was living with her in 1861. Catherine's future husband,
James CULLINANE, also came from County Waterford, so it is possible that the
pair arrived together. But why Jersey? We will probably never know.

marriage certificate. Rather Surprisingly, the groom's father is recorded
as John CONDON, but other sources quite clearly indicate that Michael CONDON's
father was William CONDON. At present (Oct 2014), my assessment is that
the groom's father's name on the marriage certificate must be an error.
The parents' marriage place (Waterford, Ireland) is also included in the Jersey
Births Register (but not included on birth certificates) for Michael & Alice
CONDON's Jersey-born daughters Mary and Alice (information supplied during phone
call to Jersey Registrar's Office, 28 Nov 2001).

"March ye 2nd 1748/9
Thomas LUCAS of St Edmondbury
In Suffolk Cordwainer a Batch
And Eliz HAGER of Tharfield in
Hertfordshire Spinster"
The daughter (bp.1723) of William & Martha HAGGER was the only 'Tharfield' Elizabeth
who could have married Thomas LUCAS. There was another Elizabeth, the daughter
(bp.1728) of Thomas & Sarah HAGGER, but she married Thomas HOLLOMAN at Therfield
in 1753. This fact is confirmed by her father Thomas HAGGER's will, which names his daughter Elizabeth HOLLIMAN as
a beneficiary.

the will of Rebecca's husband, John FOX. Rebecca FOX left a will, a copy
