Notes: When I asked around the family, everyone told me the same story
- that my grandfather (Alfred Henry Hagger) was the eldest of six children, and
that he had 4 sisters (Lydia, Grace, Molly, and Ivy) and one brother (name unknown)
, who died young. It is assumed that the brother died around Christmas
time, because Christmas (so I was told) used to make my grandfather sad, because
it reminded him of his late brother.
A search of the baptism register of All Saints Church found two brothers, Henry
George (1894) and Frederick (1899). And subsequent research (following
release of 1911 census) found another brother, George (1906), and two sisters,
Lily Maud (1888) and Sarah (1902) - none of whom survived childhood.
Of the 3 brothers, Henry George d.14 Jan 1903 (aged 8), Frederick d.27 Nov 1899
(aged 10 months), and George d.25 Aug 1906 (aged 1 month). Their ages alone point
to Henry George being the brother my grandfather missed so much, but he was also
the one who died nearest to Christmas.
