birth certificate, supplied by David Pracy. The certificate suggests
that Florence May's mother was married to Walter James PRACY, but there is no
evidence for such a marriage. Walter may well have been Florence May's
father, but he plainly was not around when she was born. This resulted
in Florence May's maternal grandmother (the informant) providing the registrar
with false information, although her motive is unclear. She might have
been told that Walter James planned to marry her daughter, Sarah Ann, or she
might have just wanted avoid her granddaughter being registered as illegitimate,
to preserve the 'family honour'. The former seems unlikely, because Walter
James married someone else (Eliza NORRIS) the next year, in Portsmouth.
